person
What do Roman actors have to do with the word person?
The word person originally did not refer to a living being. In ancient Rome, the masks worn by the actors participating in a play were called "persona" (as in "dramatis personae," the term used at the beginning of Shakespearean plays to list the participating actors and their roles). Although originating with actors wearing masks to represent certain characters they were portraying, the word persona later came to mean any rational creature or human beings in general.
