Useful Grammar For This Quiz
As in English, some verbs in Spanish do not require a preposition before an accompanying infinitive. Such verbs, for example, as querer and desear do not require a preposition.
Juan quiere estudiar inglés.
Elena desea hablar con usted.
Other verbs, however, require a definite preposition before the infinitive which accompanies them. Study the following examples.
Él aprende a leer.
Tratamos de venir temprano.
Él nos enseña a escribir.
Él insiste en esperar.
Note further that, not only after prepositions accompanying certain verbs but after all prepositions in Spanish, an infinitive is used and not a gerund.
antes de comer
cansado de estudiar
interesado en ver, etc.
* Quedar en is to be translated as to agree. Dejar de means to stop or to terminate. Acabar de is to be translated as just having done (something). All three of these phrases are idiomatic.
Nosotros quedamos en ir a la playa hoy.
Juan dejó de fumar.
Ellos acaban de salir en este momento.
