Reflexive Pronouns
Model Question and Answer: Supply the reflexive pronoun required in each sentence. Q: ¿Cómo _____ llamas? |
Useful Grammar For This Quiz
A reflexive verb is one where the subject acts upon itself. The reflexive pronouns in Spanish are placed directly before the conjugated verb. The reflexive pronouns are me (myself), nos (ourselves), and se (yourself, himself, herself, yourselves, themselves). The conjugation of a typical reflexive verb lavarse follows:
LAVARSE (to wash onself)
| yo | me | lavo |
| tú | te | lavas |
| él; ella; usted | se | lava |
| nosotros, -as | nos | lavamos |
| vosotros, -as | os | laváis |
| ellos, -as; ustedes | se | lavan |
The student should observe carefully that many verbs are reflexive in Spanish which are not used reflexively in English.
Yo me levanto.
I get up.
Yo me desayuno.
I eat breakfast.
Yo me quedo.
I remain.

Reflexive Verbs & Definite Articles
Model Question and Answer: Supply the necessary definite article. Q: Ana se quitó _____ guantes. |
Note that in Spanish, when we refer to some action associated with parts of the body or articles of clothing, we use the definite article after all reflexive verbs rather than a possessive adjective. Study these examples:
Yo me limpio los (not mis) dientes tres veces al día.
Elena se quitó los (not sus) guantes.
