As already indicated, all of the vowel-changing verbs studied (contar, pensar, almorzar, encontrar, mostrar, acordarse, acostarse, empezar, cerrar, sentarse, despertarse, volver, perder, entender etc.) — (See: Vowel-Changing Verbs Present Tense) have been verbs of the first and second conjugations. All of these verbs, although changing the vowel e of their stem to ie, or o to ue in the present tense, suffer no such changes in the past tense (el pretérito). In the past tense they remain completely regular.
Yo volví a las ocho.
Él no entendió lo que dije.
Ellos perdieron mucho dinero en ese negocio.

All of the verbs of the third conjugation (IR Verbs) which undergo a change in their root vowel in the present tense also have one slight irregularity in the past tense construction (el pretérito). They change the e of their stem to i or the o of their stem to u in the third person, singular and plural, of the past tense (el pretérito). The following conjugations of sentir and dormir are typical; that is, sentir is typical of those verbs changing e to i in the third person singular and plural of the past tense; dormir is typical of those verbs changing o to u.
