Vowel-Changing Verbs Of The First Conjugation: In the present tense of certain verbs of the first conjugation, the vowel of the stem changes from o to ue, and from e to ie whenever the accent falls upon this vowel. The endings remain regular.
CONTAR (O to UE) - to count
| See: | contar |
PENSAR (E to IE) - to think
| See: | pensar |
NOTE: No change takes place in the first person plural of these verbs because the accent does not fall upon the vowel of the stem but upon the first syllable of the verb ending.
Model Question and Answer: Supply the proper form, present tense, of the verb. Q: ¿A qué hora (almorzar) usted? |

VOWEL-CHANGING VERBS OF THE SECOND CONJUGATION: In the present tense of a few verbs of the second conjugation, the vowel of the stem also changes from o to ue, and from e to ie when the accent falls upon this vowel. Again, as with the verbs of the first conjugation undergoing these same changes, the endings remain regular.
PERDER (E to IE) - to lose
| See: | perder |
VOLVER (O to UE) - to return
| See: | volver |
NOTE: Entender changes the e of its stem to i; it is thus conjugated exactly like perder.
| See: | entender |
Llover changes the o of its stem to ue; it is thus conjugated like volver; except that llover is a defective (impersonal) verb and exists only in the third person singular. It thus has only the one form llueve in the present tense.
| See: | llover |

VOWEL-CHANGING VERBS OF THE THIRD CONJUGATION: In the present tense, certain verbs of the third conjugation also change the root of the stem, when stressed, from e to ie and from o to ue.
NOTE: Although undergoing the same changes in the present tense, these verbs are treated separately here from those of the first and second conjugations because, as will be studied shortly, these verbs also undergo additional changes in the past tense (el pretérito). As has been already studied, such verbs of the first and second conjugations remain regular in the past tense.
NOTE: Sentir used reflexively (sentirse) means to feel. Used non-reflexively, sentir means to sense or to be aware of, also to be sorry.
NOTE: Dormir used reflexively (dormirse) means to fall asleep. Used non-reflexively, dormir means simply to sleep.
SENTIR (E to IE) - to feel; to sense; to be sorry
| See: | sentir |
DORMIR (O to UE) to sleep
| See: | dormir |
Model Question and Answer: Supply the correct form, present tense of the verb. Q: Nosotros (preferir) hacer camping. |
The verbs preferir, mentir, divertirse, and morir belong to the same group as sentir and dormir, studied in the previous lesson. The first three of these verbs (preferir, mentir, divertirse) change the vowel e of their stems to ie when the accent falls upon this vowel; they are thus conjugated exactly like sentir. Morir changes the vowel o of its stem to ue; morir is thus conjugated exactly like dormir.
| See: | preferir | |
| See: | mentir | |
| See: | divertir | |
| See: | morir |
NOTE: The verb morir, although sometimes met in non-reflexive form, is more generally used reflexively (morirse).
Model Question and Answer: Supply the correct present tense form. Q: Los niños (repetir) lo que oyen. |
Vowel-changing verbs of the third conjugation (PEDIR, REPETIR): A special group of verbs of the third conjugation change the vowel e of their stem to i in the present tense, when the stress or accent falls upon this vowel. The verbs pedir and repetir are both typical of this group. Following are the conjugations, in the present tense, of these two verbs:
PEDIR (E to I) - to ask for
| See: | pedir |
REPETIR (E to i) - to repeat
| See: | repetir |
Note, again, that as in the case of all vowel-changing verbs, the first person plural remains regular since the accent does not fall upon the vowel of the stem but, instead, upon the first syllable of the ending.
Model Question and Answer: Supply the correct form, present tense of the verb. Q: Nosotros (preferir) hacer camping. |
Other verbs belonging to the same group as pedir and repetir, studied in the previous lesson, are servir, reírse, vestirse, despedirse. All of these verbs change the vowel of their stem from e to i in the present tense when the accent falls upon this vowel. They are thus conjugated exactly like pedir and repetir.
| See: | servir | |
| See: | reír | |
| See: | vestir | |
| See: | despedir |
