In addition to este (this) and ese (that), covered above, there exists in Spanish a third demonstrative adjective aquel, which also has the meaning of that over there. Aquel, however, serves to indicate things at considerable distance from the speaker. Thus, while ese describes things near the person to whom one is speaking, aquel is used to indicate things at a distance from both speaker and listener.
Aquel automóvil al otro lado de la calle es del señor Gómez.
Aquellas flores en el jardín son muy bonitas.
