Spanish Grammar Test: Vowel-Changing Verbs
Past Tense of Vowel -Changing -AR and -ER Verbs
Instructions:Supply the past tense of the verb.
Question: El niño empezar a caminar a los ocho meses.
Answer: empezó
Useful Grammar
As already indicated — (See: Vowel-Changing Verbs Present Tense) some -ar and -er verbs, for exmple, (contar, pensar, almorzar, encontrar, mostrar, acordarse, acostarse, empezar, cerrar, sentarse, despertarse, volver, perder, entender etc.) change the vowel e of their stem to ie, or o to ue in the present tense. However, these verbs do not go through such a change in the past tense. In the past tense they remain completely regular.
Yo volví a las ocho.
Él no entendió lo que dije.
Ellos perdieron mucho dinero en ese negocio.
