Useful Grammar
The past tense (el pretérito) in Spanish corresponds exactly to the simple past tense in English; thus it is used to describe any completed* action or event in the past.

he ate
ellos vendieron
they sold
Verbs of the second and third conjugations (i.e., those ending in -er and -ir) are conjugated in the following manner:


* Just as in English, for a continuing past action, a second past tense is used, the so-called imperfect past tense (el imperfecto). This will be studied in a later exercise.
