Useful Grammar
The use in Spanish of the verb gustar (to like) is more readily understood if gustar is translated literally into English as to please. Thus I like this book becomes in Spanish This book pleases me. (A mí me gusta este libro.) Other examples of the use of gustar follow:
A Juan le gusta bailar.
John likes to dance — literally, To dance pleases John.
No nos gustan estos ejercicios.
We don't like these exercises — literally, These exercises don't please us.
NOTE: As in the case of all verbs, the form of gustar is determined by the number and person of the subject. The tense, of course, will vary with the particular situation.
A mí me gustan estos libros.
A Juan no le gustó la película anoche.
A ellos no les gusto yo.
